Coming
from San Miguel de Tucumán down Roca Ave. and southwestwards on
road 38, we drive past the ruins of San José de Jesús del Monte
de los Lules, a Jesuitical convent with a high historic value.
Farther on to the south, we arrive at Acheral and
there, turning off to the west, we take provincial road 307 so as to go up to
Valles Calchaquíes. It is a mountain road, surrounded by thick vegetation;
halfway, we will see the Monument to the Indian: 3,609 ft. (1,100 m) high.
We then arrive at the Menhires Park, which
is a relevant historic testimony; La Angostura Dam borders the park. Fishing,
water sports, etc.
We can tun off to the
left in order to visit El Mollar, a simple and disorderly mountain village.
Then, we go on down road 307 in order to get to the Tafi del Valle village.
In this vacation resort, besides visiting the Jesuitical La Banda Chapel
and the dairies, we can also enjoy horse-riding, trekking, enduro, mountaineering,
conventional sports, etc.
Southwards down
the same road we can get to Infiernillo, one of the highest mountain passes
in the Tucumán mountains (3,609 ft. or 3,040 m high). Several miles ahead,
we will find the premises of the Ampimpa astronomical observatory. A few
miles farther on from there is Amaicha del Valle, of a unique microclimate,
where we will be able to appreciate handicrafts, tapestries, museums, etc.
Taking road 357, we can visit the ruins of Quilmes,
where there is also an archaeological museum, from there, along road 40 and 22
miles (36 km) ahead, we arrive at Colalao del Valle. Vineyards, archaeological
ruins of El Pichao. At this point, we can either decide to go on towards Cafayate,
in the province of Salta, or back to San Miguel de Tucumán.
