RUINS OF SAN JOSÉ DE LULES
![]()
This
agricultural and industrial area, which has a municipal bathing resort and a campsite,
is 12 miles (20 km) away from the provincial capital.
The ruins
of the San José de Lules church are a valuable testimony of the work carried
out by the conquerors in the province. It was a Jesuitical reducción (settlement
of converted Indians) in its first period and later the fathers of the Society
of Jesus set up the first public education school in Tucumán. The place
then was transferred to the Dominican fathers, who rebuilt the temple in the 18th
century.
