Iglesia de la Merced (church).
Address: 24 de setiembre and Rivadavia.
This
church also called de la Victoria is the third since the city of Tucumán
was settled in the site it occupies nowadays.
At first it was a
humble chapel. From the architectural point of view, we can have an idea of what
the church was like, considering the colonial chapels kept until today, such as
those of Trancas or Chiquiglasta.
Due to its deplorably bad repair,
a new church had to be built, next to the former, in 1834. Only in 1880
was it finished. In 1916 it had to be closed because the building was unsafe;
26 years later, it was pulled down in order to leave room for the building of
the temple nowadays known as Iglesia de la Merced.
With
a neocolonial style, it is characterized by having a very simple interior. It
was declared to be Historic National Monument in 1938.
In
this church, the image of Nuestra Señora de las Mercedes (Our Lady
of Mercy) who, in 1812, after the triumph of the Battle of Campo de
las Carreras, was proclaimed General of the homeland armies. The gold
cane with a gold handle offered by General Manuel Belgrano after the battle
ended is also kept there.
