Casa Histórica de la Independiencia (Historic House).
Address: Congreso 151.

Casa Histórica - FachadeIt was in this house, which belonged to the traditional Bazán family, that the independence of the United Provinces was declared on July 9, 1816.

It is an old colonial house, rebuilt on the basis of photographs and documents of the period. It has only one story, in which the rooms are situated around a large inner yard. The room at the back is the one used for the meetings of the Congress and keeps its original structure. There is also a second yard which shows a typical aljibe (well) and finally a recently opened third yard which opens to 9 de Julio street. In the walls of this last yard valuable relieves by Tucumán-born sculptor Lola Mora have been put up. The rooms are adorned with portraits of Argentine national heroes, chests and furniture from the colonial period and the armchairs and table used in the historic session.

Due to the its bad repair condition, in 1903 it was decreed that the whole house should be pulled down except for the room where the Oath of Allegiance was taken; in order to preserve this chamber, a French style pavilion was built, with railings and glass panes. The curious pavilion displayed the room as a small house within, which you entered through a gate with railings and a large courtyard with palms, on whose sides two high relieves by Tucumán-born sculptor Lola Mora were put up.

Finally, in 1941 the rebuilding to its original shape (which was carried out under the supervision of the renowned architect Mario J. Buschiazzo) was allowed, and on August 12 same year it was declared to be a Historic National Monument.
